The current East London Branch Committee was formed on 12th July 2010, at the Woodenham Community Centre in East London. Guests included Barrister Attaur Rahman, Mirza Ashab Baig, Mohammed Monchab Ali, Nurul Islam Mahbub, M A Mannan, Meah Monirul Alam, Syed Abdul Quiyam Kaiser, Dr Mujibur Rahman and Abu Taher Choudhury. It was followed up by an EC meeting to delegate different posts to members.

M A Ghofur was elected Chairperson, Abdul Malik Kuti as the Secretary and Abdul Noor Chowdhury as Treasurer.

Bijoy Dibosh – Victory Day

16th December 2010

We held a gathering to remember the events of the Victory Day 1971, the day the Pakistan Army surrendered and the war of liberation was over. At midnight a group of members of GSC East London Branch went to Altab Ali Park in East London, to place flowers at the Shahid Minar Replica.

Drug Use in Tower Hamlets

15th January 2011

We held this meeting to raise awareness of the increase in drug related issues in Tower Hamlets. Local councillor Cllr Shirajul Islam, attended as the chief guest along with other central members of GSC. We discussed how we can help reduce the use of drugs in Tower Hamlets, how we can approach drug users and what methods we should take in helping them.

International Mother Tongue Day

21st February 2011

Members of GSC East London Branch along with members of GSC South East went to Altab Ali Park at Midnight to place flowers at the Shahid Minar Replica. Prior to the event a get-together was held on the day with GSC South East Members, members talked about how our mother tongue was formed and how we can continue teaching our mother tongue to the next generation.

Shadinotha Dibosh - Independence Day

26th March 2011

March the 26th is the National Day of Bangladesh. GSC East London Branch arranged another get-gather to talk about the events of this day. Members talked about how this day commemorates the declaration of independence and the start of the Bangladesh Liberation War 1971. Barrister Attaur Rahman, Mirza Ashab Baig, Mohammed Mochab Ali, Syed A Q Kaiser, M A Mannan, Isbah Uddin and Abu Taher Choudhury all attended.

Troubles in Dhaka Airport for visitors

21st May 2011

The committee gathered to discuss about troubles visitors to Bangladesh face in the airports. Up to 75,000 British Nationals visit Bangladesh each year; there are regular reports of theft and harassment at Dhaka and Sylhet Airports. We discussed some of the issues which include touts offering to carry bags, many of whom are thieves. We talked about different issues and how we can avoid these issues happening.

EC Meeting – Bangla Language at Local Schools

11th July 2011

A meeting was arranged to plan, how we can approach local schools to make the language Bangla one of the International Languages to learn. We talked about how our children are mixing the English language and the Sylheti Language they are learning at home and are not learningthe language of our Mother Tongue. Members of the GSC Central and GSC South East attended this meeting.

Iftar Party

18th August 2011

Iftar parties are great gatherings with food, friends and family. Guests of different ages, children to seniors, cultures, regions, languages, are all fasting as equals and sharing food, prayers and blessings with all. We gathered with members from the GSC Central and GSC South East and talked about Ramadan, we then prayed together, we broke our fasts and enjoyed a meal.

Tower Hamlets Demonstration against The EDL

3rd September 2011

East London Branch Committee members gathered to join other members of the public including the Mayor of tower Hamlets, CWU deputy general secretary Tony Kearns, East London Mosque’s Dilowar Khan, former MEP Glyn Ford, veteran local antifascist Phil Maxwell, Terry Stewart of LGBT group Out East, former council leader Phil Maxwell and a range of other local trade union and community representatives. It was a successful and peaceful demonstration.

A View Exchange Meeting with Oliullah Noman Special Correspondent of Daily Amar Desh. Attending this meeting where other guests Mufti Shah Shodor Uddin, Moulana Saleh Ahmed and other GSC Central Members. This meeting was regarding different issues in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Biman, Direct Flights from London to Sylhet

17th October 2011

A crisis meeting was held, upon hearing the news that Bangladesh Biman plans to cancel direct flights from London to Sylhet. Many GSC Members attended and all agreed that action must be taken to prevent this from happening.
